The Malevolent Quija Board - Evil Encounters

By Seeker7

Ouija boards have been the subject of countless books and movies. Many of us, in at least some form, have dabbled with it - for the most part with zero activity. Neither have most of us had any ill effects or repercussions. Why then should this odd looking contraption have such a dangerous reputation?

Even yet there is no real answer to that question. Many paranormal researchers and psychics will simply say that the board opens up portals or doorways allowing lower or other unfriendly entities to come through. But is this true? Research has been conducted on numerous occasions where the users of a ouija board were blindfolded. In most of the experiments the messages received were nonsense. Having said this, many experiences during a normal session can also produce gibberish. But if this is the case then where has this 'dangerous' reputation come from?

Perhaps spiritual energies are manifesting not because of the board, but because of the people and the circumstances? Can spirits and entities use the energy created by a ouija board session to manifest? Irrespective of why paranormal phenomena takes place through a ouija session, the effects can be terrifying. I do realise that many people all over the world have used ouija boards with very positive results. But for many this is not the case as we shall soon see.

There are thousands of stories from people all over the world, telling disturbing and frightening stories about their experiences with the ouija board. The accounts are all unique but at the same time there is also a strange similarity. Further more, a common thread is not only a sense of discernible evil during some sittings, but that this continues for some time after the session has finished. On occasion these negative manifestations persist until action is taken to banish them. It may not be a surprise to learn that the majority have never used a ouija board again.

Two work colleagues were spending the night at an old hotel in Southampton. After dining out with their husbands - who fell asleep - both ladies met later in the hotel bar for a drink. It was late but two of the staff who had finished work invited them to sit down. The two workers had been arguing about the hotel's reputation for being haunted. It was at this point that one of the ladies suggested holding a seance. A ouija board was made up from scrabble letters and they began the session. It began with the usual 'is anyone there?'. Everything remained quiet. As time passed it didn't seem like anything would happen. Then one of the ladies described a sensation:

"It was as if a haze surrounded us…not a visible haze, just the feeling of one. This is when I suspected something was about to happen."

The glass then at last began to move. The question was asked 'Who are you? . Interestingly the surname of one of the hotel staff came through on the board. By this time the person in question had actually removed his finger from the glass. His name was again formed by the glass. By this time the group were becoming a bit disturbed. One of the ladies then, and to this day she does not know why, asked:

“Is there a God?”

The glass began to move as if gliding, forming a continual figure of '8' as it did so. Then whatever was controlling the glass seemed to become angry. The glass moved violently, knocking the letters off the table onto the floor. By this time the group were terrified and abruptly ended the session. What happened next is a frightening account of what ouija board sessions can produce. I will let the main participant relate the rest of her story:

"...some time later (I can’t really remember how long), something occurred that I can only put down to messing with the Ouija.

I felt restless on this particular evening and stayed up quite late into the early hours of the morning. Eventually I decided to take myself off to bed. On entering the bedroom, I bent over the bed to climb in when suddenly something struck me hard in the back. I sensed instantly the strike was not from a human and I lay wheezing and unable to scream. I just waited. I then began raising myself up — it hit me again in the back, but much harder this time.

I sensed evil surrounding me and I slowly turned my head to face whatever it was. But it was too late — it hit me again in the back… striking me harder…it felt like it was inside my body now. I could hardly breathe and I now realised I was being possessed…or even about to die.

I prayed to God in my mind, and began raising myself up again. Immediately I felt what can only be described as a pulling sensation and then I fell on the bed…’it’ had gone.

A presence of good seemed to fill the room for around a minute and I knew without any doubt that my prayer had saved me. All fear left me and as I lay there. I thought about the question I asked during the séance… “Is there a God?”… I had been given the answer and I have never stopped believing in God since!"

The above account is one of the most interesting and indeed terrifying encounters related to ouija board use. There are so many, they would fill a few volumes. But hopefully some of the following summaries will give you a good impression of what can occur. The following accounts were told to me but I have changed names at the request of the people involved.

Entity Attack.
Two sisters in their early teens - we will call them Amy and Jess - decided to use a ouija board while their parents were out one night. They had found the board in a store cupboard under the stairs. This was actually the third session they had with the board. The first time very little happened but they seemed to get one spirit contact but no name. On the second occasion the board began to answer questions asked by the girls about boyfriends, school, future husbands and so on. Also on this occasion they were given a name of the spirit - 'Tom'. He seemed very happy to answer any questions the girls asked, so much so that they spent a number of hours on the board. The third session took place on the night of a Charity Christmas Ball being held by their Dad's workplace. Since both parents would be going, the girls were pretty certain they would not be interupted.

The girls set up the board in a spare bedroom. Amy recalls that they did notice at the time that this bedroom did seem very cold on this particular night, but since it was December they didn't think too much about it. They put a fire on and sat down next to the board, placing their fingers on the planchette. Normally they would have to wait a few minutes before things got going. They were therefore unnerved when the planchette began to move immediately. Not only that but the movements were sharp and aggresive. They stared in shock as the planchette began to make a continual figure of eight movement on the board. Jess described it like it was gliding on an ice rink. The girls were also puzzled that although they repeatedly asked for 'Tom' their was no response. The oldest sister, Amy, then described how she felt a bit odd like she was heavy but also lightheaded. She thought perhaps a headache was starting. This feeling grew in intensity until suddenly she found herself unable to breath, her chest became tight. She thought she was going to faint. At the same time she felt burning sensations in both legs and arms. The sense of evil that surrounded her was intense and she experienced a freezing breeze around her. Terrified, the only thing she could think of was to start saying the 'The Lord's Prayer', loudly in her head. She repeated the prayer four times. She felt a mass of pressure on top of her head, then it suddenly lifted, her chest relaxed and she could breath again.

When she recovered a little she found Jess next to her, terrified and shouting if she was alright? When they both looked at her arms and legs there were several fresh bruise marks in the area where she had experienced the burning sensation. There was also a faint stench that they could not identify and the room had gone extremely cold. Jess, who had witnessed the attack on her sister also related how she saw a shape like a dark mist hovering over Amy's head during the time that she couldn't breath. The girls were terrified. They risked the anger of their parents and admitted everything to them when they got home. The board was taken about five miles away and thrown into a local landfill.

The sisters then related how, for a few nights afterwards their home felt odd. There was a strong sense of being watched. Sounds of scratching and knockings - also witnessed by their parents. The house was then blessed by their local vicar and within two weeks the house returned to normal. They never found out who or what attacked them that night. Was it Tom who had pretended to be a friendly spirit? Or had another entity pushed Tom aside in order to play havoc? We will never know.

Burnings & Moving Objects

Mary and Jim, who had recently moved into their new home, had close friends staying with them. The day before their friends were due to return home they took them to a local pub. Unfortunately due to a fight at the local bar their night out finished sooner than expected.

They had a couple of more drinks at home. Laughing and talking about their younger days they decided to have a ouija board session. It had been many years since they had 'played' and were convinced that, as in previous years, nothing much would happen.

The two women set up a small round table and cut out letters of the alphabet, numbers 1-10 as well as the words 'yes' and 'no'. The men fixed drinks for everyone and brought a spare glass to use as a planchette.

As expected they sat around the table waiting for something to happen. After almost half an hour of silence from the board, they had decided to call it a night, when suddenly the glass moved. The women giggled, accusing the men of pushing it. They both denied this. The glass moved again, at first slowly, then more easily. Mary grabbed a pen and notepad and started to jot down the letters the glass went to. At first it seemed to be random letters with no meaning, but eventually a message of sorts seemed to come through. Only a few words were finally dictated by the board, they were - "I am not" and "die". Jim's friend turned to the others and stated that this was not funny and that if anyone was making up the words to stop it now. But looking at their faces, he knew no one was. Suddenly they heard a cracking sound like electricity, followed by a stench of burning. Startled they jumped to their feet puzzled and uneasy. They could not figure out where the noise had come from or what was causing the burning smell. They decided to stop the game and removed the letters and glass. Jim lifted the small table they had used. He immediately shouted to the others to look - on the underside of the table there was a large scorched area as if having been burnt. Shocked, they immediately took they table outside. Chopping it into pieces, they began to burn it and threw the letters and glass onto the burning heap.

However the strange events continued for the next two weeks. Here are just a few of the incidents that occurred:

  • On waking up in the morning things would be moved. Especially two pictures that hung in the lounge - they would be angled, and one was almost upside down. This happened on two occasions.
  • Knocking and scraping sounds were heard by both Mary and Jim at night when going to bed.
  • The house developed cold spots. This was unusual, for although it was an older house, it was always extremely warm.
  • Jim is adamant that on at least two occasions he saw, what he calls, 'black things' darting about in the hallway. Mary states that she didn't see these shadows but did feel she was constantly being watched. In addition, she states that on waking up about 4am one morning she saw to pinpricks of light on the near wall. Mary describes them as being like two very small eyes that just seemed to melt into the wall.

Neither Mary nor Jim had any particular religion, but researched on the internet for any kind of advice. They found a 'white witch' who agreed to come and cleanse the house. Since the cleansing nothing of any note has taken place but for Mary and Jim their days of 'playing' with the ouija board were over. Mary states that today she still doesn't follow any particular church. However, before leaving, the 'white witch' gave them a card on which was printed a protection prayer for Michael the Archangel. Mary still recites this prayer every night before going to sleep. It is not clear exactly who or what this entity was. The 'white witch' did sense that there was a negative energy in the house, but that "something darker" was attached to it and was able to enter the physical home when the group used the ouija board.

Other Accounts

There are numerous other accounts that could be shared here unfortunately space doesn't allow for that. But below is a summary of the most common phenomena that can occur when ouija board sessions turn nasty:

1. Frequently, the alleged spirits that come through the board begin by being friendly and protective. However, this often changes into negative behaviour such as

  • telling lies
  • foul language
  • abusive and threatening communications
  • When people have used the ouija board with others and particularly on their own, the consequences can be more troubling. There have been a few accounts where people seemed to have been induced to abandon family, friends and career after following instructions from a ouija board entity. Some people claim that the ouija board, in a couple of cases, has been the cause of people commiting suicide. However, there is no direct evidence for this. There are other claims of ouija board entities causing fatal accidents. For the most part these really should be put down to coincidence since the evidence is not that compelling.

2. Spirit Attachment.

This should not be confused with possession. In addition, with spirit attachment the 'victim' often has no idea that this has happened to them. This phenomena can occur through use of the ouija board where unintentional or sub-concious invitation has been given by the users. Some signs that this may have occured are unexplained tiredness, unexplained bouts of depression, feelings of being watched/presence, hearing voices, unusual and uncharacteristic behaviour. However, most of these symptoms are usually the sign of an underlying medical problem and you should speak to your doctor if you have concerns. Spirit attachments can also attach to a home rather than a person. The nature and intensity of the attachment can vary. Anything ranging from a grounded child spirit to a demonic entity. Basically you can view most spirit attachments as a form of supernatural parasite, sucking out your energy. This is where many believe that the true 'vampires' exist. Not a dangerous, dark cloaked figure with fangs, but an energy form (alive or dead) that absorbs into itself the energy source of another living being.

3. Possession.

This is one of the main claims that has been made about the consequences of using a ouija board. Sometimes the spirit or entity can be benign. But more frequently the possession would seem to be caused by either a human or non-human entity with evil intent. Possession does not always occur imediately after the ouija board session. If the theory of opening a spiritual portal is true, then possessing entities seem to have been able to do so via this portal and at the unintentional invitation of the sitters. Possession can last for minutes then fade or it can be a long-term build up leading to full possession requiring the help of specialists.

4. Classic paranormal phenomena is also a frequent result such as - poltergeist activity, scratchings, rappings, voices, cold spots, 'shadow' people, odours and stenches of unknown origin, mysterious lights/orbs, unexplained mysts, crackling like electricity, objects being scorched/burned with no apparent cause. It is also very common for paranormal phenomena to continue after the ouija board session has been stopped, even when the board has been destroyed. There have been thousands of cases where outside assistance from paranormal researchers, psychics and other specialists have been needed to help people who have dabbled with ouija boards.

5. Direct physical attacks are also fairly common - scratches and bruises being the most frequent. Verbal attacks are also commonly reported. However there are accounts where some of the participants have allegedly been picked up and thrown against walls or off chairs. These can occur during the ouija session or afterwards. In addition it is not uncommon for objects to be thrown directly at the users of a ouija board - on occasions causing injury.

6. There have also been many accounts of people destroying the ouija board in order to get rid of whatever it has attracted, but to no avail. In some cases the destruction of the board seems to have caused an increase in paranormal activity. Many people believe that to burn the ouija board is the best method to get rid of negative energy. However, many accounts relate how the burning of the board actually made matters worse.

7. Paranormal activity that seems to have arisen due to the use of a ouija board is not always confined to the place where the session took place. People have frequently reported the sense that they have been followed home - or even to work. In addition they may also experience other paranormal activity within their own homes even although the session did not take place there.

Causes For These Experiences?

What then could be the cause of such mayhem when using a ouija board?

1. Dissociation

This may be the cause of some cases where attachment or possession seems to have occurred. Dissociation of the personality is where the persona/character of a person splinters causing alternate states to develop. These alternate states can project different characteristics to such a degree, giving the impression that there is a separate person/entity involved. But some investigators challenge the theory of dissociation to account for all phenomena erupting through use of a ouija board. They maintain that this theory alone cannot account for all aspects such as information of events/people that the person could not have any knowledge of; poltergeist activity, shadow people and so on.

2. Group creation/tulpas.

This may seem like a new theme for many but in fact this has been investigated for many years with some success - the ability of a group working as one to create an energy figure that appears to be independant of the group. Within the teachings of the occult and mysticism, mind or thought forms are nothing new. Within occult teachings the name for these creations is a Tulpa. Alexandra David-neel in 'Magic and Mystery in Tibet' relates how she achieved this - but she never wanted to repeat the excercise. Following ancient rituals, and extremely intensive exercises, she crafted her own thought form or Tulpa. She created what she believed would be a benign tulpa - a very jolly and happy monk-like energy. However, within a short space of time the tulpa began to change from happy and benign to aggressive, sneering and sly. It took an enormous effort to get rid of this thought form that was actually seen manifesting in her home.

This is very interesting, because as we have seen, many people who have used the ouija board also remark how contacts through the board, begin as very friendly and helpful. But as with the tulpa, begin to change into something nasty or evil. So could the use of the ouija board actually be creating a mind form that on occasion is let loose? It may be possible, but the tulpa theory doesn't explain all the phenomena witnessed by ouija users such as - poltergeist activity, noises, voices, burning of objects and so on.

3. Psychokinetic Energy

At its most basic level this is the ability to move or manipulate objects with the mind alone. It is possible that during ouija board sessions, seances and so on, that an individual or group may build a high level of energy that is then released causing poltergeist-like activity. But this theory does not cover other phenomena that has been reported such as shadow figures, odours and so on.

4. Spiritual & Other Entities

This is by far the theory that most people believe is responsible for any kind of experience from the ouija board. And it is certainly the only theory that would seem to cover most if not all of the phenomena that can take place.

The difficulty here is trying to explain why or how spirits/entities are able to use this method to manifest. Is it the group effort? Not really since people do use the ouija board on their own and have had manifestations on the same level as group work. Is it the intention or concentration? This is difficult to accept. Mostly because the ouija is used as a game rather than a serious effort to contact or research paranormal phenomena.

Perhaps all this phenomena has nothing to do with the board itself? This is possible. If you think about it the majority of people do not get any results - positive or negative - from using a ouija board. In addition much of the research shows that what the board produces can be absolute nonsense.

However, this still does not explain the reputation of the ouija. My personal suggestion is that the board itself is not the main reason for supernatural occurences. There has to be other factors involved. Perhaps these factors could be - the location, the people involved, the history of the site, the timing - for example seasons of the year when the spiritual veils are thinner - all probably contribute to whether or not a ouija board session will produce anything. What the ouija board may do, is that it helps to concentrate all these factors together. When all required ingredients are present then a portal or doorway opens.

But given the accounts in this article is it a doorway we really want to open? For most of us the ouija remains still and quiet. For others some form of portal is thrown open giving full, unrestrained invitation for unknown forces to enter. Are they malevolent or benign? This remains unknown until it is too late.

I'll finish this article by directing you to the two video clips that follow. These relate to a curious phenomena that seems to be manifesting with ouija board use - a ouija board demon. This refers in particular to a manifestation who calls itself 'Zozo'. I haven't researched this subject myself but it is an intreresting development in the lore of the ouija.

Finally. For anyone who may feel they are under attack through using a ouija board or through a general haunting I have included a few protection prayers that can be used as well as some links to other information sites.

As with all things, I believe that you should not play around with things that you don't understand, and for most people ouija boards fall into that category. People who are genuinely interested in learning about how to communicate with spirit or develop their psychic potential should join a reputable development circle or course, instead of scaring themself witless with ouija boards

Hi CMHypno,

Many thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I think you have hit on the nail on the head when you say "..playing around with things they don't understand...". There is so much that is unknown about the use of a ouija board and the elements that are brought together to produce such negative effects, that to go into this situation is at least foolhardy at best stupidity. But humans being the curious creatures we are, many will continue to use the ouija. I agree that people will learn more and certainly be much safer joining a spiritual circle/psychic school. Many thanks again for your comment and here's hoping it will influence some not to fool around.

Hi Seeker, my mates and I used to have quite a few seances. Usually with just a glass on a coffee table, occasionally with a board. One time a person's name was spelt out, someone none of us knew, we asked a few questions one being how did you die? The word ugly was spelt out, giving me cold shivers. Sometimes the glass would move around with none of actually touching it. I'm a big sceptic normally, but it is hard to understand how this occurs. Cheers

Hi attemptedhumour,

Really nice to hear from you again and many thanks for stopping by.

I was the same, 'playing' ouija with a made up board. What a weird experience you had - not surprising it sent shivers up your spine!!I have heard a few accounts of the glass/planchette moving of its own accord - pretty scary stuff if you ask me. I never did have anything weird happen. But my older sister (Trish)did attend one ouija board session with friends and a few, really creepy things happened. The most bizarre was that one of the guys seemed to have got followed to work and heard someone/thing calling his name for a couple of weeks after he had used a ouija with friends. Think he slept with the light on for a while!

Very nicely done. I do believe the board attracts spirits, and mostly negative ones at that. Best left alone!

Hi Vellos,

Many thanks for stopping by and for your comment. I totally agree with you. There are people who will claim that their experiences have been positive. But when you carry out research the vast majority of people will say the opposite. Whether it is spirit or another reason for ouija board experiences, I agree, on the whole it is best left alone. Many thanks again for stopping by.

Also, from the accounts I've read an experience may start out positive and as it progresses become steadily more and more negative over time as the board user(s) become more drawn to using the board.

Hi Vellos, You're right. I think that is the really creepy thing about many of the ouija board encounters. That 'it' whatever it is, starts out nicely - maybe to gain confidence - then turns real nasty. Time and time again this happens and for some with serious consequences.

Very good hub! Interesting video with John Zaffis. I have seen him speak and he was kind enough to give me some good advice once with regard to exorcism (not in any way related to Ouija boards, by the way). I used to manufacture spirit boards. I believe they - like the tarot cards - can be a tool to help people develop psychically. The problem is that too many people aren't ready for this and they do not use the proper approach with the Ouija. Then they blame a piece of wood or cardboard and plastic! Of course, that's ridiculous. But, it doesn't stop them. What Zaffis is talking about is explained by the book, "The Excalibur Briefing." There are swirling vortices of energy, which can become fixed.

Hi Angela,

Many thanks for stopping by and for your interesting comment. I agree with you about the point if people know how to use these tools properly that they can be great for development. A friend of mine, who is Wiccan, has used a spirit board especially made for her when she was learning the craft. Her tutor taught her how to use the board and she has found it to be not only a great way to learn but very positive. The stories I researched for here were of course ordinary people who didn't open or close the board properly and basically had no idea of the dangers invovled - in essence a game, but one that went horribly wrong.

The book "The Excalibur Briefing" sounds very interesting and I'll look for a copy. I've always been an admirer of John Zaffis, it would be great to meet him one day. Thanks again for taking the time to comment - very interesting information.

Thank you for a really interesting hub.

This might interest you: I have only been involved with people "playing" with the Ouija board on three occasions. Once in Australia, about fifty years ago, once on board ship in 1965, and once in England perhaps in the early eighties.

When people had attempted a session, and when some sort of "presence" announced itself, the very first thing that was said on each of the three occasions, was that the "presence" was not prepared to continue if I remained in the room. Not that I just had to stand back and not participate, but that I was to leave the room and go as far away as possible.

Several reasons were given, but they didn’t make much sense to me and the participants didn’t tell me at a later date. None of the participants in each session were participants in any of the other session.

Along with your prayers of protection from “evil”, may I suggest an addition; an Islamic Surah (a “chapter” in the Qur’an) , known named al-Falaq:

1. I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak,

2. from the evil of that which He hath created

3. From the evil from the darkness when it is intense

4. From the evil of malignant witchcraft

5. And from the evil of the envier when he envieth

Hi Twilight Lawns,

Wow! That is so interesting. I haven't heard of anyone being asked to leave before a 'presence' would start to communicate. For me - and this a very personal opinion - I would be suspicious of a presence that wanted to keep someone at a distance. The only reason I can think of is that in some way the 'presence' or whatever it was, had reason to fear you being near them. If it was an ordinary person why would they be scared? Many thanks for the Islamic Surah, I will certainly include this in the list of prayers. Many thanks for your comment and input it was great to hear from you.

seeker7 - I agree with you here. Ouija boards are dangerous, I'm not sure why as I've used other divinatory tools and never got quite frightened or negative occurrences with anything but a ouija board. My story on my horrifying ouija board experience is told in my hub below. I had encounters with a spirit that called itself "Z". Very terrifying indeed and I've never used a ouija board since!

By the way, I truly enjoyed this hub. Well researched, well written, and great theories!

Hi Kitty,

It's always great to hear from you and I thoroughly enjoy your input. I will definately read your experiences - they are dangerous but I find the accounts or encounters should that be? Fascinating.

Wow! Your hubs really blow me away Seeker7. I could add a few stories to this one as I was 15 when I bought my first board through FATE magazine and I can say for a fact that it works. My son just threw his away after experiencing something holding him down in bed.

Hi Lilleyth, many thanks for stopping by - I really enjoy your comments and this one is particularly interesting! I think what fascinates me about the ouija is that people have so many different experiences. I do know one couple who have used the ouija for over 30 years now and have only ever had positive things from it. Others just seem to touch the board once and they get negativity big time. Perhaps the time and place where the board is activated will result in good or bad?
